Prospects for AIDS vaccines

2002
The AIDS pandemic is massive worldproblem, particularly in Africa and insome areas in Asia. An effective vaccinewould appear to be the most pragmaticway of controlling it and solving theassociated social and economic problems.Despite intense efforts, prospects for avaccine that induces sterile immunityagainst HIV-1 infection remain bleak. However, promising results from vaccinecandidates that induce cellular immunityagainst the virus have raised hopes of avaccine that can at least contain HIV-1replication and, as a result, prevents thedisease from progressing.
