Nucleosomes (NCs) are the major primary autoantigens in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and autoantibodies against dsDNA and NCs are a serological hallmark of SLE. However, it is still unknown why NCs, which are ubiquitous and abundant self-components, become immunogenic in SLE.
