Statistical foot-shape analysis for mass-customisation of footwear
2015
This paper proposes a method for statistical foot-shape analysis that can be applied to the design of mass-customised footwear. First, three-dimensional shape geometry data are preprocessed to ensure the compatibility of the meshes. The data are then clustered with respect to their geometric similarity, and the shape clusters are produced accordingly. The clusters are then statistically analysed to capture the underlying trends of shape variations, which then provide useful background knowledge for the design of footwear. We tested our method using a 3D foot-scan database, and obtained useful outcomes that can benefit the footwear design process. Our method is distinguished from others in that it is capable of considering the entire geometry of the foot, rather than just a partial description.
