Simulation of lightning signals through cloud based on Monte Carlo method

2011
In this paper, we simulate lightning signal transport through clouds. The model uses a Monte Carlo method simulates a random walk in three dimensions cloud for lightning-produce photons. It considers the various cloud geometries and microphysical characteristics, and simulates sources of emission with arbitrary spatiotemporal properties. The model treats the light propagation through clouds having a variety of shapes, sizes, and the optical depth and constructs the delayed and attenuated light curve. We find that the shape of the cloud, the cloud optical depth and the position of the event within the cloud, rather than the motion or extend of event, are the greatest determinants of the resultant distribution of photons on the top of cloud and required time.
