Characterization of breast tissues using Compton scattering
2010
Abstract In this work we measured Compton X-ray scatter signals from normal (adipose and fibrous) and neoplastic (benign and malignant) breast tissues using a photon energy of 17.44 keV (Kα radiation of Mo) and a scattering angle of 90° ( x =0.99 A −1 ), in order to determine their electron densities. The results of electron densities obtained were compared with experimental and theoretical data published previously, showing considerable agreement among them (differences smaller than 5%). Statistical comparisons were made using the obtained distributions, showing that normal adipose breast tissue clearly differ from all other types of tissues. Finally, the results were discussed on the basis of histological and metabolic characteristics of these tissue types.
