Predicting container terminal daily workload: a Middle East port case study

2021
Abstract Data already at the disposal of terminal operators can be used to develop time-of-days models to predict daily workload related to truck arrivals. Model results are expected to assist terminals to increase their efficiency by optimally allocating personnel and equipment. This chapter develops time-of-day models using aggregate data already available in port container terminals. Estimation results reveal that the container characteristics affect pick up times. In addition, days of the week present different pickup patterns. The application of these models recompensates the lack of reliable information and can be combined with truck appointment systems to assist operators.
