An Analytic Calibration Method for Turntable-Based 3D Scanning System

Using a turntable in a 3D scanning system is a stable approach for constructing a 3D model. To register the scan sequence accurately, we proposed a robust and simple method using a new mathematical model to calibrate the turntable axis. We placed a rectangular tool on the turntable and obtained two point-clouds of the tool before and after the turntable rotating. A transformation matrix was calculated by registering the two point-clouds. The turntable rotation axis was then calibrated by calculating the transformation matrix form camera coordinate frame to turntable coordinate frame. Experiments showed that calibration result is quite precise that scan sequence in different angles of rotation can be registered accurately.
