The metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents: a clinician's guide.

Abstract This article reviews the components of the metabolic syndrome, the theory behind the combined negative effects of insulin resistance and obesity and discusses the clinical utility of this concept in pediatrics. The latest diagnostic criteria for obesity, dyslipidemia and hypertension in children and adolescents as well as management and prevention strategies are also discussed.
