Value of high-frequency ultrasound in diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland

2013
Objective To evaluate the value of high-frequency ultrasound in diagnosis of parotid pleomorphic adenoma. Methods Clinical data and ultrasonography imaging of 46 patients with parotid pleomorphic adenoma confirmed by postoperative pathology from March 2010 to April 2012 in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Results In all the 46 cases, 42 cases were diagnosed correctly as parotid pleomorphic adenoma by preoperative high-frequency ultrasound, 1 case was misdiagnosed as the cysts of the parotid gland, and 3 cases were misdiagnosed as malignant tumors of the parotid gland. The accuracy of high-frequency ultrasound in detecting parotid pleomorphic adenoma was 91.30%, while the misdiagnosis rate was 8.70%. Conclusion High-frequency ultrasound is very helpful for making the diagnosis of parotid pleomorphic adenoma. It is easy to misdiagnose as another mass of parotid, so we must pay attention to differential diagnosis for parotid pleomorphic adenoma.
