INTRAVENOUS GLUCOSE TOLERANCE DURING TREATMENT WITH PHENYTOIN

2009
Intravenous glucose tolerance has been investigated in eight patients before and during treatment with phenytoin. The therapy did not influence glucose tolerance or insulin secretion, either the basal values, or the secretory pattern after the glucose load. Eight patients who for several years had been treated with phenytoin were investigated in the same way. These results were comparable to those found in patients before treatment. It is concluded that phenytoin, when kept below the toxic range, has little influence on glucose-stimulated insulin secretion.
