Strength Characteristics of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Sand

2018
The strength characteristics of glass fiber-reinforced sand composite are influenced by the controlling parameters of fiber content and confining pressure. A series of triaxial experiments were carried out to study on the behaviors of unreinforced and glass fiber-reinforced sand. The results show that glass fibers insertion can prevent the formation of the strain localization, provide an increase in strength and shearing strength parameters. Linear failure envelopes fit the data well for all the mixtures studied (unreinforced sand and the glass fiber-reinforced specimen). The deviator stress at failure and strength parameters of the sand- glass fiber composite increase as the fiber content increases. The cohesion changed more significantly than internal friction angle due to the glass fibers insertion. It is shown that the inclusion of fibers increases the contact surface between soil particles and fibers, but it has not a strong influence on the roughness and staggered arrangement of soil particles.
