A Novel Approach to Distributing Service against BGP Path Inflation

2010
We propose a novel overlay routing infrastructure, namely Overlay-based Service Distribution Network(OSDN), which eliminates path inflation due to the inter-domain routing policy and could serve as a universal platform to convey various online services more efficiently. Its basic idea is to deploy overlay nodes at critical locations in the Internet such that the service provider and its customers can exploit the overlay routing platform to communicate through the shortest AS (Autonomous System) path, which could be unavailable due to BGP routing policy. In contrast with content distribution network (CDN), the OSDN requires less maintenance overhead and can be implemented at a lower cost.
