Road traffic accidents and alcohol: A prospective study

A prospective hospital based study was conducted on 100 living victims of RTAs and 60 victims who died following RTA to find out the incidence of alcohol intoxication in RTA victims and their relationship with demographic characteristics. It has observed in this study that young men (21 – 40 yrs) were frequently involved in the RTA. RTAs were more during night (8 PM – 12 midnight) and on weekends. Pedestrians were the frequent victims of RTAs. Blood analysis of all the victims of either group was positive for alcohol. BAC of 38.2% of the victims was above the statutory limit (30mg %). The RTAs can he reduced by improving the road conditions, exposure to trffic training school before issuing driving license and strict implementation of traffic rules especially with respect to the statutory alcohol limit.
