Benign metastazing leiomyomas to the lungs

2017
Pulmonary benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BMLs) is a rare condition which accounts for the limited literature about its underlying pathophysiology, disease course and management. Materials and Methods: A prospective analysis of all BML cases diagnosed and managed during a 10-year period was performed. Demographic and clinical characteristics of these patients were presented. Benign metastasizing leiomyoma tumors were diagnosed in 5 women. The patients had a history of myomectomy for uterine leiomyoma with an interval between a pertinent gynecologic procedure and BML diagnosis from 12 to 23 years. Our patients had no complaints of pulmonary symptoms such as cough, dyspnea, etc. Each of these patients presented with multiple nodules in both lungs. We performed a video-assisted thoracoscopic wedge resection to harvest enough tissue for histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis. Histological examination revealed benign leiomyomas with no atypia and Ki 67 Conclusion: Benign metastasizing leiomyoma is a rare cause of pulmonary nodules. The diagnosis is based on the medical history of uterine myomas and histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination of lung nodules. Management includes pathologic diagnosis and long-term surveillance with or without hormonal manipulation.
