El observatorio XMM-Newton: comprendiendo mejor el Universo a través de la emisión en rayos X.

2006
ESA X-ray observatory XMM-Newton is the biggest scientific spacecraft ever built in Europe. Its unprecedently large effective area is allowing us to observe the faintest objects in the Universe. Moreover, its spectroscopic capability makes possibe to study in detail for the first time the physical characteristics of many celestial objects, from the nearby planets and comets to the most distant quasars. In this paper we start describing briefly the history of X-ray Astronomy from its beginnings in the sixties to the present, the era of Large Space Telescopes. We then describe the characteristics and capabilties of XMM-Newton and ennumerate some of the most representative results obtained so far
