Overview of Organic Agriculture in Romania

This paper tries to relief the profile of the Romanian organic agriculture. For accomplishing this desiderate data from Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) and Eurostat were collected and analyzed for the period 2006-2009. As it can be observed in Table 1, by the end of 2008 the total numbers of ecological farms reached 4191 farms, and then decreased by 5.30% in 2009. This may be due to the fact that some of the farms went off business because of the actual economical environment or were wind up because they did not fulfill the standards regarding the organic farming production. Even if the total number of ecological farms has decreased, the surface cultivated in the organic system increased by 67.60% from 2006 to 2009 according to the MADR.
