Cyanein, a new antibiotic from Penicillium cyaneum.

1962
The isolation and some properties of a new antibiotic, cyanein, isolated fromPenicillium cyaneum are described. Cyanein is a white crystalline substance of neutral character, its melting point is 199.8–201.8° C, (α)D 23 = + 82.7°. It is very little soluble in water, benzene and petroleum ether, more readily soluble in ethanol, acetone, propylene glycol,n-butanol, ethyl acetate and diethyl ether. Cyanein is effective againstCandida albicans and other fungi, inactive against the tested bacteria and Protozoa.
