Responsible Global Leadership

The emergence of two new strains of leadership research – global leadership and responsible leadership – reflects an effort to better comprehend the nature of leadership in the 21st century. Several recent publications have sought to merge these two streams. The interest in responsible leadership is both a response to numerous business scandals around the world as well as a response to the demands of a complex global business environment. Among the challenges of this complex environment is one of greater responsiveness to a broader, more diverse set of stakeholders, many of whom are demanding that global corporations take greater responsibility in helping to address social problems – e.g., human rights violations, poverty, AIDs – and environmental problems – e.g., pollution, eco-system collapse and sustainability.
