Reliability of data transmission by PLC in a DC microgrid

2019
With the increasing integration of renewable energies and the use of new communication tools, questions and problematics about voltage quality and equipment interoperability issues in a microgrid structure are increasing as the system becomes more and more complex. Energy supplier companies such as Engie or Veolia in France are also wondering about the interoperability of energy systems and the sustainability of the chosen solution. Since the smart grid is a cyber-physical system (CPS), problems can arise from both the physical and computer systems. The first feedback on microgrids shows that new challenges need to be addressed, particularly on the reliability and immunity of the system, the lack of norms and standards, in addition to the constraints already existing. This aspect of microgrid reliability refers largely to the evaluation of the reliability of power electronics components. Hence, the question to be issued is: What should be the magnitude of all existing disturbances on the physical system of a microgrid and what would be the impacts on the communication network and system control?
