[Micro-incision transconjunctival vitrectomy--a safe alternative for conventional vitrectomy].

2012
Abstract A vitrectomy is an operation in which the vitreous gel is removed for the treatment of various eye disorders. In the last years new methods have been introduced with the incisions becoming smaller, resulting in a shorter operation time and less trauma to the eye. The newer transconjunctival 23-gauge (G) and 25G vitrectomies are especially suitable for treating less complex vitreo-retinal defects such as epiretinal macular membranes and vitreous haemorrhage. The conventional 20G vitrectomy is, however, the treatment of choice for complex ophthalmic defects such as extensive traction membranes and removal of lens fragments after complicated cataract surgery.
