A quad-band stubby antenna for portable wireless devices

2001
With world globalization and increasing world travel today's mobile units are required to operate in more than one geographical region and consequently work under various standards pertinent to a specific country or a region. This forces the phone manufacturers to develop units capable of operating with various data formats, and in multiple frequency bands. In its turn antenna vendors are required to equip these multiband phones which are also called "world" phones with a cost effective, compact and efficient radiator that resonates at multiple frequencies and is capable of providing significant impedance bandwidth (up to 15%) to cover, for example, both American and European cellular frequency bands. There is a significant, body of work on the multiband stubby antennas. This paper presents an antenna concept which can be used for developing "world"-enabled portable wireless devices, e.g. cellular phones, PDAs. The major advantages of the presented antenna are: (i) wide impedance bandwidth, (ii) reduced manufacturing cost, and (iii) potential for excellent control over the manufacturing process.
