Temporomandibular disorders - Heterogeneous disorders with need for treatment individualization

The term "temporomandibular disorders" (or TMD) is a collective term used to describe a group of craniofacial pain problems that involve the jaw, temporomandibular joints (TMJs), muscles of mastication, surrounding bony and soft tissue components, and associated head -and-neck musculoskeletal structures or any combinations of these. Most frequently the patients present with pain, limitation and/ or deviation of the jaw opening and TMJ sounds (clicking). It may be associated with other symptoms, including ear pain and stuffiness, tinnitus, dizziness, cervical pain, and headache. Some patients may present with acute onset with self-limiting symptoms.
