Demand side management of residential loads in a smart grid using 2D particle swarm optimization technique

2015
Smart grid is an emerging technology which is the solution to different problems of conventional power grid. Demand side management (DSM) is a main function in smart grid for energy management. In this new paradigm, both utilities and customers are active participants for managing the amount of electricity generation and demand. Controlling and influencing energy demand can reduce the overall peak load demand, reshape the demand profile and increase the grid sustainability. Demand side management of residential load in a smart grid using two dimensional particle swarm optimization (2D PSO) is proposed in this paper. Objective of this paper is to schedule the appliances of customers in such a way that total electric price is to be minimized which also minimizes the peak power demand. The proposed system takes appliances status of next day before 24 hours with their affordable delay and schedules them by using load shifting strategy. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves peak power reduction by reducing the total bill of customers.
