Black Males on White Campuses: Still Invisible Men?

2016
This paper describes a qualitative research study exploring Black male undergraduate (UG) students’ perceptions of campus climate and diversity-related issues at a large, land grant university in the southeastern United States. Research has shown that Black male UG students report feelings of displacement, disrespect, isolation, and race-related stress while attending a predominantly White institution. Results indicate that Black male UG students in our sample struggled with (1) divergent feelings of safety and belonging, (2) institutional climate issues, and (3) personal accountability. Recommendations for future research and implications for UG academic and student affairs professionals are discussed.
