Anatomy of ACL Insertion: Bundles

2017
Over the past years, the importance of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) anatomy has been increased due to surgical implications. The anatomy of the ACL has been better studied, and several anatomical ACL reconstruction techniques have been described. However, the anatomy of the ACL is still controversy. It is known that there is an important variation of the amount of ACL bundles in the literature. The description of the ACL as one unique bundle, also as a two-bundle ligament, with the anteromedial (AM) and posterolateral (PL) bundles, or even descriptions of three bundles in which there would be a third part called the intermediate (IM) bundle are found. Nevertheless, the concept of double-bundle ACL is most accepted. The understanding of ACL anatomy is crucial to achieve good outcomes after ACL reconstruction. This chapter describes the anatomy of the ACL regarding the number of bundles, its area, and insertion sites.
