Natural Polymer-Based MOF Composites

2021
The introduction of functional MOFs into composites is an enabling technique for the integration of MOFs into real-world applications. Natural polymers (namely, cellulose, cotton, pulp, silk, and chitin/chitosan) offer a high degree of variability in terms of shaping, mechanical properties, handling, and MOF incorporation into biocompatible architectures. The morphologies and functional groups have tremendous impact on the loading of active materials, particle distribution, and functional properties of the composites. The polymers provide a stable and pliable support, and judicial choice of the MOFs endows required rigidity and relevant uses ranging from antibacterial to filtration applications. Diverse forms of composites, ranging from fabrics, membranes, and aerogels, are devised to suit industrial needs.
