The sex difference on genetics of type 2 diabetes

Objective] To assess the sex difference on genetics of type 2 diabetes. [Method] Family history were obtained from type 2 diabetic patients treated in our hospital by postal questionnaires. The families that had three diabetic patients were followed. [Results] A total of 312 cases had first degree positive family history, 109 cases were male and 203 cases female. The ratio of male to female was 1∶1.86(P0.01). In 204 cases parent were affected, 62 fathers and 152 mothers, among them 12 cases both father and mother were affected, the ratio of male to female was 1∶2.84(P 0.001). Among 108 patients whose children were affected, 52 cases were male and 89 cases female. The ratio of male to female was 1∶1.71(P0.001).[Conclusion] Type 2 diabetes has obvions genetic predisposition. Maternal influences were more important, therefore preventing offsprings of diabetic mothers from developing type 2 diabetes is very necessary.
