Space launch safety in Australia

2010
Publisher Summary This chapter reveals the amalgamation of the qualitative and quantitative standards. It amounts to a safety regimen that is very much geared in protecting public safety and property from risks arising from the space launch as dealt in the chapter. According to SLASO, the standards are much lower than the upper tolerance limits used in quantitative risk assessment in other industries, including the offshore petroleum industry. It also unveils that none of the commercial launch projects mentioned at the beginning of this chapter that gave rise to the Space Activities Act has been realized. Therefore, there is no longer a strong economic or political case for the establishment of a commercial launch industry in Australia. However, it finally conveys that the safety regimen is well-established and ensures that the highest standards of public safety are achieved in any Australian space launch activity.
