Shunting of train units is usually done by noisy diesel locomotives, which are not shut down in idle mode. Alstom now proposes an environmentally-friendly and technically advanced solution, replacing the traditional diesel propulsion by an electric/hybrid system. An electric propulsion system, consisting of a battery pack, diesel generator, power electronics, electrical motors and a mechanical gearbox are integrated in an existing locomotive. The generator charges the batteries, but may also provide additional battery-power during peak performance. The hitherto test runs in Regensburg, Nuremberg and Rotterdam show a significant fuel reduction. The locomotive offers economical advances for the operator and environmental protection due to reduction of emissions.
