Practical Benefits of Case Reporting

2017
Case reports are an undervalued component of the medical literature. They represent an important mechanism for disseminating novel observations to a broad audience. Case reports form the foundation of the evidence-based pyramid; these early observations inform larger, more rigorous research studies which can have far-reaching implications for population and public health. Case reports allow clinicians to share experiences that may deviate from the accepted standards of care, either because a case does not fall within the scope of established guidelines or due to patient preference regarding treatment. Publishing a case report is an achievable goal for many trainees and junior clinicians interested in developing their medical writing skills and building a track record of publication. This chapter addresses the practical benefits of case reporting with a focus on the role of case reports in enhancing the medical literature, patient care, and career development.
