Where Urban Space and Wilderness Meet—The Landscape Design of Irchel Park on the Zurich University Campus

2011
Irchel Park embodies a unique spirit due to the interaction of urban space and wilderness. By giving nature the possibility to grow wild in different intensities within the park, its design concept goes beyond the aim of the classical landscape garden and incorporates the idea of 'laisser-faire' nature—with minimal human intervention—allowing nature to assume part of the design task over time. The design concept of the park enables a close interaction between its visitors and the natural settings. By providing the possibility to experience the sensations of a widely untouched natural setting in an urban context, Irchel Park offers an opportunity for a deeper sensibility towards nature, and stands for a closer relationship of man and nature.
