The development of basic demographic statistics in sub-Saharan Africa from 1940 to 1980 is examined using data for Nigeria and Zaire. Various censuses and surveys are described and evaluated with a focus on the impact of political factors and data completeness. A brief overview of the entire region is included. (ANNOTATION)
