Relevancia del manejo multidisciplinar en los pacientes hospitalizados por fractura de cadera

2021
Hip fracture is a prevalent disease with high impact on quality of life and comorbidities, which increases the rate of mortality and hospital readmissions. Objective : Understand the usefulness of a multidisciplinary medical-surgical group in the management of these patients. Methods : A prospective study was conducted in hospitalized patients (n=633) diagnosed of hip fracture between the 01/01/2017 and the 12/31/2017 (both inclusive) (n=273). The data were compared with a historical cohort of the previous year (01/01/2016 to 12/31/2016) (n=360). The variables analyzed were: mean hospital stay, resulted in death during admission, a month, 3 months, and early readmissions (first month of discharge). Results : A decrease in the rate of intra (10.3% to 6.2%) and extra-hospital mortality after a month (6.4% to 1.5%) and 3 months (3.1% to 1.4%) after the hospital discharge were observed in the intervention group compared to the control group, without statistically significant differences (p>0.05). Similar results were observed in the rate of early readmissions (9.7% to 6.4%). These improvements were not related to a decrease in the average hospital stay. Conclusions : Hip fracture affects elderly patients with several comordities. Due to that, a multidisciplinary management is suggested to improve the mortality rate and quality of life.
