Geocaching: Inquiry Learning with a Sense of Adventure

2018
Inquiry learning is a formal approach that seeks to scaffold learners in the development of critical thinking and practical skills through small scale investigations. Learners receive structured support to develop scientific inquiry skills, ultimately taking over control of their own learning. This chapter presents a study of 659 members of the online community of Geocachers that illustrates how inquiry learning can be translated into the informal learning context. Geocaching is an outdoor pursuit where Geocachers create engaging location-based challenges for each other. The findings show how Geocachers have integrated inquiry learning into their practice, injecting a sense of adventure and excitement.
