Pipe line operators learning to meet offshore challenges

1981
In 31 years of offshore oil and gas production experience, pipeline engineers have developed the technology to combat most problems caused by external corrosion, outside disturbances (from anchors, storms, fishing tawlers, etc.), and internal attack by various forces. Coatings and cathodic protection systems safeguard pipelines and risers from external corrosion. Damage from outside forces is still a concern, particularly from dragging anchors and spud barges that frequently drive spuds directly through a buried line. In multiphase systems, lines suffer from internal attack particularly in restricted-flow areas where contaminants may collect. The use of inhibitors or internal coatings can help prevent corrosion.
