The Temple of Eleusis (near Athens) is constructed of marble and limestone that show decay phenomena due to environmental and biological factors. Analyses show the following: green patina indicates photosynthetic organisms; gray film indicates black fungi; yellow film indicates lichens, algae, and fungi. Each film is associated with metallic elements. The analyses highlight the role of microorganisms in the transport process of metallic elements. -- AATA
