A New Homothallic Species of Neurospora from Hungary

1991
The genus Neurospora was erected by Shear and Dodge (1927) who included four species. Further taxa were added by Tai (1935), Dennis (1960), Gochenaur and Backus (1962), Nelson et al. (1964), Mahoney et al. (1969), Frederick et al. (1969), Arx (1981), and Perkins and Raju (1986). Perkins and Turner (1988) accepted ten species but, on the basis of molecular hybridization data, Glass et al. (1990) suggested that several of the homothallic taxa possibly might be synonymous. During a recent visit to the puszta or plains region in eastern Hungary several soil samples were collected. These yielded a number of interesting fungi including a species of Neurospora. Since this isolate does not appear to be identical with any of the known members of the genus, it is being described as a new taxon.
