EFFECT OF SUGAR ON ATHEROSCLEROSIS IN NONHUMAN PRIMATES

1973
In male monkeys, the response of serum lipid levels and atherosclerosis to diets containing large amounts of sucrose were studied for a period of 26 months. The first change during the experiment was the loss of tail which was also observed in sucrosefed rats. Atheromatous lesions were observed in aorta and coronary arteries. The fasting blood sugar and cholesterol levels were increased.
