Gender-related differences in coronary angiograms of young survivors of myocardial infarction

Abstract Studies have shown that women have a lower prevalence of coronary artery disease and are 10 to 20 years older than men when angina or myocardial infarction first appears. 1,2 Because myocardial infarction in women aged ≤ 40 years occurs infrequently, little is known about these patients. Therefore, the present study was performed (1) to determine the extent of coronary artery disease in female survivors of a first myocardial infarction aged ≤ 40 years, and (2) to compare the severity of coronary artery disease in young male and female survivors of a first myocardial infarction.
