Region 5: Near East.

2000
This review examines developments in the cool season food legumes since IFLRC II in dy1992. The area, production and yield have generally decreased in the Maghreb and increased in West Asia. Climatic conditions during the period and changes in supporting policy programs seem to be the reason for these developments. Consumption tends to be stable but projections are that demands will increase and supplies will be limited, resulting in an increase in imports to most of the countries. Turkey will remain the main producer and exporter in the region. Research has made substantial progress but its impact is still to be seen or quantified.
