Lasiosiphon glaucus: Preliminary Phytochemical Screening, Antioxidant Activity and Anti-inflammatory Activity of Ethnomedicinal Plant

An important ethnobotanical medicinal plant Lasiosiphon glaucus was evaluated for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potentials. The plant showed significant antioxidant activity as evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging activity (IC 50 100 µg/ml) and ABTS radical scavenging activity (IC 50 96 µg/ml) and Total antioxidant activity of 33 mg/g ascorbic acid equivalent. The plant has a total phenol content of 8.7 mg/g gallic acid equivalent. It is evident form HRBC membrane destabilisation assay that the plant has significant anti-inflammatory activity (IC 50 200 µg/ml) when compared with the standard drug diclofenac. All the above results draw attention towards the benefits of further evaluation of medicinal potential of an important ethnomedicinal plant L.glaucus.
