A combination of an existing hot-tensile testing apparatus including a high-frequency heating device as a means of diameter detection is presented. The induction coil is not only used for heating but also for the installation of an eddy-current based diameter measuring system. This contactless measuring technique has been chosen since the tensile specimen is surrounded by an alumina tube to stabilize the specimen during the melting phase. Hot tensile tests have been carriout out for an austenitic steel X 2 CrNi 18 10 (304L) and true stress-true strain curves were determined
