The state of regional lymphatic nodes is one of the most strong prognostic factors in breast cancer. The method which enables to estimate the presence of metastases to the nodes without the necessity perform lymphadenectomy is a biopsy of the sentinel node (SN). It demands from the surgeon the experience to obtain the greatest efficiency of the SN identification. The authors estimated the influence of the acquired experience on the results of the sentinel node biopsy in group of 195 patients with primary breast cancer in which the sentinel biopsy was performed with the blue-dye or united blue-dye-isotopic technique. The obtained results showed a significant influence of the experience on the success of the identification of the sentinel node in all the group. The united blue-dye-isotopic method was the most reliable and most efficient.. The positive results of lymphoscintigraphy was an independent influence factor on the success of sentinel biopsy, independent from the surgeon's experience. Our results showed the essential influence of the acquired experience on the results of the sentinel node biopsy. The authors think that the indispensable minimum necessary to the passage of the so-called learning curve is independent perform at least 30 SN and regular verification of obtained results.
