URBAN TRANSPORT PROBLEM AND MODAL CHOICE

1971
A STUDY OF FUTURE TRANSPORT NEEDS IN THE NEW TOWN OF STEVENAGE LED TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE PUBLIC INTEREST WOULD BE BEST SERVED BY AN ENHANCED, FAST, MODERN AND CONVENIENT BUS SERVICE, WHICH WOULD AVOID THE NEED FOR AN ELEVATED ROADWAY OR TRACKS. THE STUDY SUGGESTS THAT THE MOTORIST'S APPARENT PREFERENCE FOR USING HIS CAR RATHER THAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS NOT A FULLY REASONED CHOICE, OR ONE BASED ON FULL INFORMATION. HE DOES NOT REALIZE THE COST TO THE COMMUNITY OR TO HIMSELF. /AUTHOR/
