The influence of grip width on two-handed grip strengths in females

2000
Abstract Nineteen female adults were tested for maximal voluntary contraction strengths of two-handed grip in a snap-type action at 11 different grip widths, ranging from 3.8 TO 16.5 cm in increment of 1.2 cm. The results indicated that the greatest strength was achieved at the smallest grip width and the weakest at the largest width. Also, strength declined linearly with increasing width at the rate of 18.5 N per cm, and the strongest two-handed strength was 1.61 times as strong as standard one-handed power grip strength. Relevance to industry The results of this study provide new data on grip strength that can be used for designing tasks and equipment, and for evaluating bilateral muscular efforts in manual gripping and squeezing tasks.
