A Primer on Antimicrobials

Abstract The discovery of antimicrobial agents was one of the most important advances in the history of medicine and has led to in a major decrease in infections. This chapter describes the various classes of antimicrobial agents available in clinical practice, highlighting their mechanisms of action, spectrum of activity, side effects, and mechanisms of resistance that pathogens use to overcome them.
