Study of lipoprotein profile of people infected with HIV in Cote dIvoire

1999
A prospective study was conducted in Abidjan to identify the biochemical disorders that occur among HIV-infected individuals and to help in their follow-up. 150 men and 54 women of mean age 35 years participated in the study. The study subjects were aged 17-72 years and included 112 AIDS patients hospitalized at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the Treichville Teaching Hospital; 61 asymptomatic HIV-infected individuals from the national blood transfusion center; and 31 HIV-negative individuals free of any liver ailment also recruited at the national blood transfusion center. Analysis of the subjects found a relatively high level of triglyceridemia a decreased level of total cholesterol and apoproteins A1 and B and a hypergammaglobulinemia with concomitant and significant increases in the level of orosomucoide as a stigmate of inflammation. These study data could help practitioners who lack CD4/CD8 counts and viral load monitoring in the follow-up of their AIDS patients.
