SAFETY LEVEL IN CARS

1983
This booklet, published by Folksam Insurance Company, classifies cars of different sizes into risk levels from the point of view of the frequency of injuries sustained by the driver. Among small cars, the VW Polo is below average while the Datsun 120y, Peugeot 104 and Volvo 66 are above average; in the medium range, the Audi 80, Audi 100, Saab 900, Toyota Corolla, Opel Rekord and Volvo 240 are below average while the Opel Ascona and Volvo Amazon are above average; all large cars are below average. There is little variation between makes with regard to neck, arm and back injuries, while head, face and leg injuries exhibit a large variation. The smallest number of head injuries are sustained by drivers of Volvo 240 and Mercedes W123. To some extent, this is due to the space available for head movement. (TRRL)
