Fuel cell with a sacrificial layer, in order to reduce catalyst support corrosion in a fuel cell electrode

2007
Fuel cell comprising: an anode catalyst layer; an ion-conducting polymer membrane that is disposed adjacent to the anode layer; a cathode catalyst layer comprises a cathode catalyst which is positioned on a carbon support for the cathode catalyst, said cathode catalyst layer adjacent to the ion-conducting polymer membrane arranged; and a first sacrificial layer disposed between the cathode catalyst layer and the ion conductive polymer layer, and / or a second sacrificial layer disposed between the anode catalyst layer and the ion conductive polymer layer, wherein the respective sacrificial layer contains an amount of reactive material which electrochemically faster than the carbon support of the adjacent catalyst layer.
