Aging in Brazil and Portugal and Its Impact on the Organizational Context

2017
Population aging is one of the main challenges the world will face until the middle of this century. So, the work world must be prepared to retain older workers, and several actions could be proposed to deal with this new scenario. However, there is a shortage of research, studies, and interventions related to the impact of aging on the organizational context. This chapter aims to analyze the theoretical and empirical production about the topic, giving emphasis to Portugal and Brazil. There is a pressuring need for retirement-related research in those countries, especially due to old workers’ permanence in the labor market. It also approaches antecedent issues to age management, such as reduced ageism, flextime and job control, workers’ upgrading, and ergonomics measures. This reflection is expected to provide inputs to further research, interventions, people management practices, and governmental policies.
